I thought that moving through the city with headphones would exacerbate my feeling of isolation, so I always stayed headphone-free walking or on the bus. In the last year I started to listen to music when I was out and about because the din of everyone talking on their cell phones on the bus was too much, plus I felt old and curmudgeonly experiencing the same thing for so long. But I found favorite songs that I'd forgot that I'd thrown on the mp3 player. It gave me the alone time that I didn't think that I needed as much as I do. For years I was just the opposite.
