Records

April 28th, 2009

These are the only records I’ve bought since my last post in this category:

  • Skoal Kodiak - Three People Are Keep Having Grape Emergencys (I bought it from them after their show at the entry in… February?  March?)
  • Solid Gold - Get Over It 7″.  A limited edition single with handpainted covers and a bonus “mix tape” (CD)
  • John Frusciante - The Empyrean.  Fuck yeah!  See below.  I’ve been falling asleep listening to this a lot lately.  It’s been inspiring.  Read John’s description of it (below.)

It is a concept record which tells a single story both musically and lyrically. The story takes place within one person, and there are two characters. It contains a version of Tim Buckleys, ‘Song To The Siren’ and the rest of the songs are written by me. My friend Josh plays on it, as does Flea. It also features Sonus Quartet, Johnny Marr and The New Dimension Singers. I’m really happy with it and I’ve listened to it a lot for the psychedelic experience it provides. It should be played as loud as possible and it is suited to dark living rooms late at night.

Weird Snowman and Loud Music

December 28th, 2008

There’s this weird-ass snowman across from the CC Club. I snapped some shots of him today while I was record shopping.

Weird Snowman

I bought LCD Soundsystem: Sound of Silver.

Madison

October 20th, 2008

I’m back from Madison, the zinefest, the highway, the house show etc.  I was really hung over yesterday because I decided to carry brandy around with me the night before.  All in all it was really the best trip to Madison I’ve ever had.  I only saw one spider.  I sold a few things, left CDs in some stores.  The Zinefest was a little weird because it was in a theater and the tables were in the audience area so it was really dark, and my table was set aside facing the bar (which was closed) where nobody else was and so I didn’t get that much traffic.

The house show went well, although my left hand locked up and got really stiff.  I can really only play the acoustic for like 20 minutes.  But the songs went well because the room was filled with people I’ve never met so I was really nervous.  I always play better when I’m nervous.  Maybe I should’ve been doing this stuff when I was 20, when I could play for hours and it didn’t matter.  Fuck.

Bought some records:
Scritti Politti - Cupid and Psyche 85
Iron and Wine - The Creek Drank the Cradle

Back to my life.

Record Shopping

Polara - Pantomime EP.  A four-song single from 1995.  It has an extra track that wasn’t included on the CD version

John Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer - A Sphere in the Heart of Silence

Things That Spin in Circles

October 15th, 2008

1. Vinyl Records.  I bought a turntable, then went to the Needle Doctor to fix it.  I realized I never ruined a record, but I have plenty of CDs that are scratched up to all fucking hell.

Today I bought:
Radiohead - Hail to the Theif
Elliott Smith - XO
(both of which I have scratched CDRs)
Bettie Servert - Lamprey (out of print 90s record on yellow vinyl I found for super cheap)

2. CDs.  The old plastic compromise.  I pack ‘em up with printed uncoated paper to bring some dignity to it all.  It’s all on YouTube.

3. Four wheels under a steel box.  I’m going to Madison this weekend for the big Madison Zine Fest.  I’m tabling with zines and CDs and playing an acoustic house show.  I haven’t yet been out of the state as a clear-headed thirtysomething.

4. Dough in the air.  I start a new job at Uptown Pizza tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to returning to life outside of chains-ville and still getting paid to drive my car.  Pizza delivery is a cool job because people are less likely to be in a sour mood when you’re bringing pizza to their door.  Especially when it’s awesome pizza.
